No Means Nothing Coin Achievement Bug Explained: Why 999 Is Not 1000

The "Bug" That Is Not a Bug

If you opened this page, you are probably staring at a Coin counter that reads 999, an achievement tile that still reads locked, and a growing suspicion that something in No Means Nothing is broken. The short version: it is not. The longer version lives below, but the one sentence you need is this — the visible Coin stat caps at 999, and the Money Master achievement tracks a separate running total that needs to cross 1000.

Once that distinction clicks, the rest of the frustration falls away. You stop grinding the same warehouse shift expecting the badge to pop, and you start planning across the run instead.

The Three Numbers You Need to Hold in Your Head

Three verified values from the in-game config explain everything that looks like a bug. They are not estimates and they are not community lore — they sit in plain text in the game files.

  • Coin default: 343 — the starting balance on a fresh run.
  • Coin max (visible HUD): 999 — the stat refuses to display higher than this.
  • Achievement target: 1000 — the running total the Money Master badge watches.
  • Per-day earnings cap: 200 — the most a single workday can bank.

Put those four together and the picture is immediate. You start at 343. The HUD will not show anything above 999. The badge wants 1000. So the badge cannot fire from the visible stat alone — it has to be reading a different counter that keeps climbing past the HUD cap. That counter is the running total of every coin you have ever banked, not your current wallet.

Why the 998 Trap Feels Like a Bug

Most players who report the achievement as broken are actually stuck at 998 or 999 on the running total. The HUD shows 999 because that is its ceiling, and the badge has not popped because the running total has not yet crossed 1000. The gap is usually one missed pickup somewhere across Day 1, Day 2, or Day 3 — a single bronze coin left under a shelf, a gold coin skipped because the timer was about to expire.

The trap is psychological, not technical. The HUD says 999, the badge says 1000, the difference is one, so it feels like the game is withholding the last point out of spite. It is not. The HUD and the running total are simply different counters, and one bronze pickup you forgot is the entire distance between them.

How Coin Values Actually Work

The in-game coin config maps three pickup types to fixed values, and those values are the only thing that feeds the running total. There is no randomization, no multiplier, no streak bonus — just denomination math.

  • Bronze: worth 1 coin.
  • Silver: worth 2 coins.
  • Gold: worth 5 coins.

That means a single missed gold pickup is the same as five missed bronzes. If you are restarting a day to chase the badge, prioritise gold pickups first — they are the largest single leaps the running total can take.

The Daily Cap Is the Real Planning Constraint

Each workday is hard-capped at 200 coins banked. That cap is the reason a single clean run usually is not enough. Starting at 343 and banking 200 on Day 1, 200 on Day 2, and 200 on Day 3 puts the running total at 943 — short of 1000 by 57. That is the math behind the "I did everything right and still did not get the badge" posts.

The implication is straightforward: a single run will not get you there unless you are carrying over progress from a previous run. Plan for either a disciplined two-run route or treat the achievement as a long-haul goal across multiple playthroughs.

A Practical Route That Actually Crosses 1000

The cleanest approach is to treat Day 1 through Day 3 as a coin-focused sweep, ignore most optional spending, and bank every pickup you can. The order below is field-tested and keeps your ending route intact.

  1. Day 1 — anchor save. Hit the per-day cap of 200 before the shift ends. If the timer is about to expire and you are short, prioritise gold pickups; one gold is worth five bronzes.
  2. Day 2 — same cap, different layout. The Day 2 placement pool forces you to sort five product codes against the clock. Do not let the sorting pressure distract you from sweeping the floor for coins first — placement pays out in shift score, not in the running total.
  3. Day 3 — tightest timer, same cap. Day 3 gives you the least real time to work, so pre-plan your route. If you are short of the 200 cap when the timer warning hits, finish the mandatory scans first and grab coins only on the way to the exit.
  4. Do not spend. Any coin spent on optional interactions comes off the running total. Treat the entire run as a no-spend exercise.
  5. If the badge still has not popped, do a second run. The running total carries over. A second clean Day 1–3 sweep adds another 600 to the lifetime counter, which crosses 1000 with room to spare.

Things That Are NOT the Bug

Community threads are full of fixes that have nothing to do with the actual mechanic. Before you reinstall the game, delete save files, or verify Steam integrity, rule out the following non-issues.

  • "The achievement is region-locked." It is not. The running total is a local counter; it has no online component.
  • "You need to deposit the coins at a specific spot." You do not. Every pickup feeds the running total immediately on collection.
  • "The badge only fires on a specific ending route." It does not. Money Master is endpoint-agnostic; you can unlock it on any ending including Wasted.
  • "Patching broke it." The four config values (343, 999, 1000, 200) have been stable since launch. If a patch did change them, the new values would be visible in the same config files.

What to Do if It Really Is Stuck

If you have banked well past 1000 across multiple runs and the badge has still not fired, the most likely explanations are, in order: a save file corruption that has frozen the running total, a Steam overlay conflict delaying the achievement sync, or a rare instance where the running total silently reset between runs. Try these in order before assuming the worst.

  1. Back up your save folder.
  2. Quit the game fully, restart Steam, and verify game integrity.
  3. Load the backup save, run a single Day 1 sweep, and watch the HUD. If the HUD climbs, the running total is also climbing.
  4. If the HUD does not climb at all on a fresh Day 1, your save is corrupted — restart from a new save and accept a rebuild run.
  5. If the HUD climbs but the badge still does not fire after crossing 1000, file a Steam support ticket; this is genuinely outside the verified mechanic.

The One-Sentence Summary

The Money Master achievement is not bugged — it is reading a different counter than the one you are staring at. Stop watching the HUD, start watching the running total, and the 998 trap stops being a wall.
